after watching several povs, there's something so striking about the way mumbo died.
he dies at home, first of all, which is notable in its own right because so much of his time was spent running about, usually in pursuit of kills. he dies with grian, too— to a thing grian created, no less, but it isn't actually grian's fault for once.
mumbo dies in that tall tower and when lightning strikes, from all across the server, everyone looks. their eyes land on that tower, and everyone is watching. even in grian's perspective, you can see everyone at renwood mound, lined up and staring. those at the bamlands looked on too.
they didn't see mumbo die, but they saw grian's grief. grian, who, throughout this season, has seemed cruel and untouchable to those outside of his circle due to his involvement with and knowledge of the wild cards. they watch grian immediately crumble under the weight of mumbo's death; several of them even explicitly comment, "look at grian, he's grieving, he's in mourning."
i like to think that, until that moment, grian was almost god-like in their minds; now, though, he's the quintessential concept of humanity. grief can be religious if you do it right, after all. even beyond the grian aspect though, isn't this just the most despairing omen of what's to come?
i mean, there's something about this image of a man fallen from grace, crying out as he holds the mangled corpse of his friend in the home they made together, high in the sky, on display for all the world to bear witness to. and the world did bear witness, be it with pity, horror, joy... it doesn't matter, because they saw.
the canary curse has been broken, but this was a fittingly foreboding, tone-setting image that did a stunning job filling its shoes
#wild life spoilers#life series spoilers#idk im not normal#i just really want someone to draw mumbo's death. im imagining it almost panel-wise?#like some panels of all the expressions on the onlookers' faces#plus of course the shot of mumbo#and a shot of grian#maybe both together.. idk im not an artist i just write#mumbojumbo#grian#trafficblr#wild life#life series#wlsmp#wild life smp#mumbo#watcher grian#technically#mumbo jumbo#waffle duo#watercolor words

no more "steve rogers doesn't know modern technology." embrace "steve rogers has no fucking clue what's a realistic timeline for technological advancement is." this guy used a telegraph one day and a hologram the next. his first introduction to the present was tony stark. he's never lived in a world with an ethernet cable. he doesn't know what the fuck an ipod nano is. if you showed him something supposed to be a groundbreaking impressive invention he'd just be like "oh neat. regular future stuff. okay." steve rogers with the tech awareness of a gen alpha kid. if you showed him a cd rack he'd have to think about it.
#*assume we're working with a sliding timescale of course. i know his comics presence has him technically around from 1960.#steve rogers#marvel#captain america

ahh elizabeth vandiver's lectures pointing out a heartbreaking moment in the odyssey i wasn't even aware of:
telemachus addresses eumaeus the swineherd as atta (ἄττα). in my fagles edition it's translated as "old friend", but as vandiver points out, atta has two meanings: it can be used as a familiar-but-respectful form of address to an older man (which is how telemachus uses it), but significantly it's also baby-talk for "father", parallel to papa/dada. it's what telemachus WOULD have called odysseus growing up, but now telemachus refers to him as xenos, a visiting stranger/foreigner.
like imagine. odysseus is in disguise as a beggar, it's the first time he's seen his son since infancy, and one of the first things he hears telemachus say, to another man, is "daddy, who is this stranger?"
#it's the switched roles! the topsy turvy conditions that have developed at ithaca in odysseus' absence#okay technically he asks 'from where does this stranger come to visit you' but he is ESSENTIALLY asking for his identity#and like of course it's wonderful that telemachus knows to trust and look out for eumaeus who is a really good person#eumaeus greets him with kisses like a father when odysseus can't#and odysseus does not act jealous of their bond but. how clear the loss of that time together IS at that moment#tagamemnon#the odyssey#odysseus#telemachus#eumaeus#🏷️

"Good" Acting
i have a theory that a lot of people say acting is "good" when they're emotionally moved by it, and a lot of cishet white people have a lifelong habit of not listening or empathising when minoritised people speak, so minority actors get called "bad" even when they display some pretty fucking amazing technical skill
#also a lot of female actors don't get recognised despite being fucking GOOD#that's not to say minority actors can't always be bad#of course we can#I'm just saying#sometimes#for SOME shows in particular#ahem ahem#some actors might get very heavily criticised for reasons that have very little to do with their actual technical skill#and more to do with the politics of those criticising them#also I'm not talking about me here#before anyone says that#I'm talking about some actors I know who have recently been criticised in my opinion quite unfairly#despite doing something very difficult#like oooohhh i dunno#playing two roles in the same show?#and doing it very well#displaying some amazing technical mastery of body and voice technique#but hey what do I know#oh wait I went to drama school and I'm a professional actor lol I DO know#I'm just a woman so I have to couch my expertise in cutesy self-deprecation lest people think I'm a bitch

I've shared a few pretty straightforward images using my CRT effect, but not much yet that really shows off what an over-engineered monstrosity I've created.
For a start, it's actually 3D. I built most of this in Blender.
Except for the optional bit that simulates composite video artifacts. I wrote that part in shader code and apply it to the base image as a separate step.
I made a high-res shadow mask texture, so it looks pretty good even from absurdly close up.
I can also adjust the scanline hardness and swap the slot mask for a dot mask or aperture grille to simulate different types of display.
Raytracing the whole thing ensures that all of these little details look nice and get sampled correctly, and if I want to change the glare reflecting off of the screen...

...I can adjust it by rearranging the furniture in the room.
So... yeah. That's what is current going on whenever I post pixel art with my CRT effect. It's not quite perfect yet, but I think it's getting pretty good.

#This would probably be way easier if I actually had a real CRT for reference#Instead I'm relying mostly on photos and technical documents from the internet#And memories of course#I really like working on technical art projects like this. I have several that I just haven't found a good way to share yet.#crt#simulation#pixel art#digital art#artists on tumblr#art process

something about merlin's constant mantra of "i'll be your servant until the day i die" repeating over and over until the last episode where he tells arthur he was born to serve him and then he loses him. but merlin is still alive. and it turns out he can't die at all really. cursed to be the one who has to keep going for centuries until arthur returns. would move heaven and earth for him and if that means waiting until he can see him once more against all hope than he will remain faithful. because even though arthur has been dead and gone merlin is still his servant, until the day he dies
#this isn't phrased well but its killing me#like. their entire beings are wrapped up in one another so much so that it breaks the laws of life and death#merlin is immortal right but like. couldn't he technically die by excalibur#which he tosses into the lake after arthur#because he is going to wait#of course he is#merlin#bbc merlin#arthur pendragon#emrys#merthur
